“Favorite Spot” watercolor by Ron Louie received People’s Choice award in 2019. Mahalo to Aaron Miyasato and 4digital Inc. for graphic art and printing

Harry Wishard of the Wishard Gallery in North Kohala, was the judge for the fourth annual Banyan Drive Art Stroll competition on the theme of “Joy in the Gardens.”

Taking first place is “Under the Banyan Tree” a watercolor by Ron Louie. “Favorite Spot” Louie’s work in 2019 took People’s Choice and is featured on the 2020 brochure and flyer.

“Under the Banyan Tree” showed a mastery of the quick, unforgiving execution of watercolors,” said Wishard.

Second place goes to “Reflections” by Craig Allen Lawver and third to “Garden of Love” by Stephen Davies.

Works selected for the judged exhibit will be on display in the Palm Room on the lobby level of the Grand Naniloa Resort Saturday, January 11. Voting for People’s Choice will take place there from noon until 6:00 p.m.

Harry Wishard was born and raised on the island of Hawai`i. His uncle Lloyd Sexton led him into the life of an artist at an early age. He has painted daily for more than 50 years.

Wishard spoke of several factors in making his decision from the entries. “First was their adherence to the theme. Then there was their skill level in their chosen medium.”

Puna Taiko will open the day at noon outside Banyan Gallery.

The Banyan Drive Art Stroll is organized by Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens and The Banyan Gallery. Held on the second Saturday in January, the noon to 6 p.m. event features plein air demonstrations in the gardens from noon to 3 p.m., a judged photographers exhibit at Hilo Bay Café through 4:30 p.m., gyotaku presentation at Suisan Fish Market at 3 p.m., block printing demonstration with Bob Douglas at Pandamonia’s Paleta Palace in Ali`i Ice, live entertainment, a silent auction, and additional indoor art demonstrations.

2020 Photography Contest Calendar Released

The grand prize — a helicopter ride with Paradise Helicopters — for this year’s cover shot goes to Kris Hawkins.

The fourth annual photographers contest to create a Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens 13-month calendar for 2020 received digital entries from professional and hobbyist photographers.

Judging was Charles Wood, a semi-retired landscape, nature, and travel photographer.

Wood remarked, “For a photographer, joy is simply being there, even if the light doesn’t work to his or her advantage. Those who develop a passion for photography will tell of their joy in the actual capture of an image they have pre-visualized.”

Chairman Vijay Karai said, “Thirteen images from eight photographers will appear as featured images for each month. In addition, 26 thumbnail size images, two images to each calendar page, will round out the total view of the gardens.”

The back cover features small views of each month, contact information for Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens, the logo for Paradise Helicopters, sponsor of the grand prize, and the bar code used by KTA SuperStores

Taking Grand Prize is Kris Hawkins of Opihikao. His “Bridge at Sunrise” was chosen by the judge as the cover image and the featured photograph for the month of August. Charles Wood also selected three additional images by Hawkins for the featured images for the months of January, May, and July. In addition thumbnail images by Hawkins will appear in March and July. Grand prize is a doors-off helicopter ride with professionals Bruce Omori and Mick Kalber courtesy of Paradise Helicopters.

“I picked up photography in high school, back in the days of film. Just recently, I got back into it while backpacking and camping,” Hawkins said. “I love Lili`uokalani Gardens. It is such a surprise to have so many images accepted.”

Photographers whose work will be featured in the calendar and the months include: Jay Takaaze (February and April), Alan Kubota (November and December), Rita French (June), Kenneth Jackson (March), Faith Cloud (September), Lisa Schwenneker (October), and Lucy Fischer (January 2021). Takaaze was the cover winner for 2019 and Jackson for 2017. Fischer is a fifth grader who entered for the first time. Her thumbnail images appear in March, June, and July.

“Early Morning Stroll” by Jay Takaaze was selected as the image for April

Additional thumbnail images, two to a calendar grid page, are from photographers Faith Cloud (September), Diane Koerner (October), Darrin Carlson (August), K.T. Cannon-Eger (October and January 2021), Alan Kubota (May and June), Eh Cuz (December), Kenneth Jackson (January 2020), Lisa Schwenneker (January 2020, April, and November), Lee Schechtman (April, May, September, and November), and Eileen Tredway (February and December).

Graphic design by Ken Goodrich of Volcano, a well-known photographer and videographer, also brings a wealth of east Hawaii events to calendar production. Dates for every known activity from Merrie Monarch Festival to the KWXX Ho`olaulea are included.

In this sample of a month’s grid, Hilo and state-wide events are listed along with two thumbnail images selected by judge Charles Wood

Printing by Hawaii Printing Corporation keeps all the work on Hawaii Island. Copies of the fund raising calendar may be purchased from KTA SuperStores at Puainako and Downtown in Hilo, Banyan Gallery on Banyan Drive near the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, or Basically Books.  Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens will have copies available at the annual Na Makua Christmas Gift Fair at the Afook-Chinen Civic Center Friday and Saturday December 6 and 7.

The first of two pages of historic photos encourages the public to look through family scrapbooks

Also included in the 2020 calendar are two pages of historical photos with an invitation to the public to review their family scrapbooks and share images from Lili`uokalani Gardens.

A photographer’s exhibit will be part of the fourth annual Banyan Drive Art Stroll on Saturday, January 11, 2020.

Board Members Feature: Kenji Kuroshima

Some people dream in color. Kenji Kuroshima is one of those people. In his daily life, Kenji is a photographer with a deep and abiding love for hula.

Kenji at the annual Kamehameha Day Festival on Mokuola in Hilo

He and his wife host many guests, particularly from Japan, and provide guide services to Hawai`i Island locations. Kenji and Michelle are tea practitioners and are deeply involved with Urasenke of Hilo at Shoroan, the tea house in Lili`uokalani Gardens.

Kenji gave a tour of photo locations in Lili`uokalani Gardens for the annual Banyan Drive Art Stroll

Kenji’s “Walking with Poliahu,” a photo of Waihonu reflections with snow-capped Mauna Kea in the background, was selected for inclusion in the 2019 calendar of Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens

Kenji also is a member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens. His ideas have guided several events and activities.

It was Kenji’s idea to fly koinobori for Children’s Day, for example. That idea grew this year to include all of Banyan Drive from Suisan Fish Market to Seaside Hotel with the most impressive display on the bridge from Kainehe to Mokuola. This year, Hawaiian fish were included with the Japanese carp windsocks.

Koinobori (carp windsocks) fly from late April to Children’s Day in early May

His guidance for proper maintenance is essential to the restoration of the bamboo thicket. The next volunteer day is Saturday, August 24. Please meet at the bamboo thicket at 8 a.m. and wear closed toe shoes and eye protection. Bring your own gloves. Other tools will be provided.

If you have a home project requiring bamboo poles, you may stop by Banyan Drive starting at 9 a.m. Bring your own saw to cut the poles to size.

April news

Banyan Gallery has a few 2019 calendars left. Funds raised support Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens.

Last week, turning the page on the 2019 calendar, I was met with delight at the sight of one of my photos selected by photo contest judge Mary Goodrich. What a glorious morning that was. I was on the sixth floor of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and got up early to prepare for a garden workshop.

Banyan Gallery carries the few remaining calendars and now has a limited edition Yoshirt with this photograph. Proceeds benefit Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens.

The calendar was prepared late last summer. We tried to include as many dates of events in Hilo as we could find. Some dates have changed since the calendar was printed.

2018 Photographers Contest Calendar Available

Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens and Paradise Helicopters extend congratulations to photographer Jared Goodwin, a student at Hilo High School, on selection of his image “Path of Reflections” as the cover image on the 2018 Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens photographers contest calendar.

(c) Jared Goodwin, 2018 grand prize winner

Speaking of photography, Goodwin said, “Beginning at the age of 13, I found a way to capture the love I have for the uniqueness and beauty of our `aina…one frame at a time. Photography is the window to my mind inspired by Madame Pele’s journeys and our beautiful shorelines.”

The grand prize winner’s award of a helicopter tour on Paradise Helicopters with Bruce Omori and Mick Kalber will be presented during the second annual Banyan Drive Art Stroll Saturday, January 13.

“Paradise Helicopters is honored to support Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens who have dedicated so much effort to this worthy cultural and community cause,” said Cal Dorn, president of Paradise Helicopters. “Our employees, many of whom were born and live in Hilo, use and appreciate Lili`uokalani Gardens and what this organization has done to maintain and improve the park.  Congratulations to Jared Goodwin on his winning photograph which will grace the cover of the 2018 calendar on this historic centennial anniversary of this treasured park.”

All featured photographs in the 2018 calendar will be on exhibit during the Banyan Drive Art Stroll from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018.

Copies of the 2018 calendar were printed at Hawaii Printing Corporation and are for sale at Banyan Gallery, near the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

Jelena Clay holds the 2018 calendar, available at Banyan Gallery

“Lili’uokalani Gardens are a community treasure. I am excited to see what our artist community will produce this year in honor of its beauty and history,” said gallery owner Jelena Clay. “Banyan Gallery will always support the revitalization efforts of Banyan Drive and the Friends of Lili’uokalani Gardens because they play a major role in the garden upkeep and improvement. ”

Copies also are available at Basically Books and on line from Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens.

The 2018 photographers contest was chaired by Vijay Karai, who remarked: “I had the pleasure of curating the Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens second annual calendar. To say merely that I received 111 entries from 24 photographers is limiting in the scope of work. What I saw in those images is limitless talent and artistic expression. Charles Wood did an excellent job at selecting those images to the calendar needs. Thank you photographers for working with the limited time frame.”

The calendar was designed by Ken Goodrich of Hawaii Photo Retreat.  “I have a special appreciation for the artistic and technical skills required to create an image that celebrates the beauty of our environment and moves people to protect our natural treasures,” Goodrich said. “Hilo is lucky to be blessed with Lili`uokalani Gardens and each photograph in this calendar reminds us just how lucky we are!  Thanks to all the photographer/artists who contributed to the imagery herein.”

In addition to Goodwin, featured photographers include: Debi Buck, Chris Butcher, K.T. Cannon-Eger, Rita French, Daghild Rich, Kornelius Schorle, and Allison T. Yano.

The 13-month calendar also features 26 small thumbnail images from Hawaii Island photographers, a message from Mayor Harry Kim, messages from juror Charles Wood and Friends president K.T. Cannon-Eger, short biographies of each featured photographer, and a history page.

For further information, contact Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens through their Facebook page or phone K.T. Cannon-Eger at (808) 895-8130.

“We are especially grateful to juror Dick Nelson from Kula Maui for bringing his professional expertise to a difficult selection process” said Jelena Clay of Banyan Gallery.

An esteemed watercolorist and instructor, Nelson studied with Joseph Albers at Yale and subsequently developed his own “Tri-hue” method of painting. During his Honolulu years, Nelson served on the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, was art consultant for Alexander & Baldwin for 10 years, and chaired the Punahou Art Department for 22 years. He was the designer and director for the Wailea Art Center on Maui and has been painting and teaching on Maui since 1978.

Juror Dick Nelson selected four artists for recognition. First juror’s choice is “Queen Lili`uokalani and her gardens,” by Valentina Montoya, an 11 x 14 pencil, ink, and watercolor piece Nelson described as “a regal queen in a setting of unabashed color fitting for any garden celebration and created with aesthetic competence.”

Second juror’s choice goes to Christine Ahia for an 11 x 14 pastel titled “Lili`uokalani me na keiki o ka `aina.” Nelson said the piece displays “the sense of calm majesty in a playful and colorful atmosphere. Color luminosity, the envy of any colorist, is exceptional.”

Third juror’s choice is for Jeffrey Pietrzak 34 x 28 watercolor “Aloha, Welcome to my gardens” set in the iconic red bridge of which Nelson said, “a fitting setting for a place of honor, (his work) brings both garden and queen together in a harmonious whole.”

Fourth juror’s choice is “Hilo Bay Serenity,” a photograph by Alan Lakritz, which Nelson described as “a formal composition of rich color harmonies which combine Hilo’s misty atmosphere with the intense hues of the foreground subject.”
